Energy Efficiency

Pie chart and color key illustrating the breakdown of petroleum use in Hawaii. The largest piece of the pie is shown in green and represents air transportation, which accounts for 36.9 percent of Hawaii's petroleum use. The second largest piece of the pie is shown in orange and represents electricity, which accounts for 29.8 percent of the petroleum used in Hawaii. Ground transportation, which accounts for 18.8 percent of Hawaii's petroleum consumption, is shown in yellow. Marine transportation, which accounts for 7.4%, is shown in blue. The smallest piece of the pie, shown in black, represents the remaining 7.2 percent of petroleum use, which is classified as "other." At the bottom of the graphic, the statistics are attributed to a Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT) report entitled "Hawaii Energy Strategy 2000."

Hawai‘i Petroleum Use

  • Hawai‘i imports roughly 51 million barrels of oil annually at a cost of nearly $7 billion.
  • More than 60% of our petroleum use is for transportation, split roughly evenly between
    • Air transportation
    • Ground and marine transportation.
  • About 30% is used to produce electricity, consumed in roughly equal parts by the following sectors:
    • Residential
    • Commercial
    • Industrial.

Do your part to help keep Hawai‘i beautiful and make our way of life sustainable by conserving energy at home, on the road, at work, and at school.

There are many ways you can increase energy efficiency and help create a sustainable, energy-independent Hawai‘i. Hawai‘i can meet its goal of 70% clean energy by 2030 but only if we all do our part to reduce our energy use.

Conserve: Use What You Need Efficiently

As you start down the path toward a clean energy future, keep in mind that the small steps you take to reduce your energy use can add up to a powerful impact on Hawai‘i's overall energy consumption.
