The primary goal of the Hawai‘i Clean Energy Initiative is energy independence. Only through energy independence, will Hawai‘i establish another HCEI goal, namely energy security.
Energy security in Hawai‘i is possible through the local harnessing of energy from solar, wind, ocean, geothermal, and biomass resources; establishing a sustainable alternative-fuel strategy; embracing hybrid and electric vehicles; and modernizing our power-grid system.

SMART GRID/CYBER SECURITY
protecting our utility grids from unintentional as well as malicious intentional disruptions. This means making sure utilities are incorporating smart sensors throughout the utility network system and also using up to date adequate information technology intelligence to thwart off any cyber attacks.
CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROTECTION
protecting our energy infrastructure that is critical to energy assurance in Hawai‘i. This means keeping the lights on as we rely more dependently on renewable energies; and not allowing any disruptions to occur in our energy supply system, such that there are no fuel shortages.
